Endoh was lying on
her bed starring up at the white bumpy ceiling. She ran the
things
she needed to do in her head. Math… done. English… done. World studies…
done.
Is there anything else I need to do? Endoh looked over at the black alarm clock she
had on her dresser. “Oh my gosh I’m
going to be late!” Endoh jumped off her bed and
threw open her closet doors. She plucked
a dark red dress with flowing black Toole for
the sleeves. The phone rang as Endoh laid
the dress on her bed. she picked the phone up
to find that Nilly was calling.
“Hello,”
Endoh said hurriedly
“Hey, are you
in your Halloween costume yet?” asked Nilly
“Uhh…not
really, I was getting into it when you called,”
“What? Well you
better hurry!”
“Yeah, yeah,
hold on will ya?” Endoh sat the phone down and slipped on her dark
red vampire dress over her clothes for
the Halloween dance. When Endoh was done
adjusting her dress in her closet mirror
she picked the phone off her bed “back,”
“Are you done?”
Nilly said a little impatiently
“Yeah, I am,”
“Ok, I’m
going to call Kumiko to see if she is done yet,”
“Ok,” Endoh
braided her waist length black hair and put on blood red lip stick.
“Endoh are you
still there?”
“Yeah,”
“Hi! Are you
guys ready to go to the Halloween dance?” Kumiko asked
“Yep, let’s
go,” Endoh waited to let it dawn on them that that was a good idea.
“Let’s
meet at my house ok?” Nilly asked
“Ok see you there,”
Endoh said getting kind of sick of all the “yeas” and oks”.
Endoh hung up the phone on the receiver.
She gave a quick look around the room one last
time before she walked out of the door.
Endoh turned the corner and saw Kumiko already
waiting at nilly’s house.
“Come on lets
go or we will be late, and it’s almost already dark,” Nilly said.
As they walked down
the street to their school they saw all the little kids going
from door to door yelling “trick
or treat”. It is amazing at how
many little kids are out
roaming
the streets without anyone looking after them, especially being as little as they
are.
Nilly, Kumiko and Endoh walked down to a more deserted part of the neighborhood.
“Guys, I don’t
like it here,” Kumiko said as a street light flickered then went dead.
“Oh come on,
it’s not that scary considering that it’s Halloween and all.
Halloween makes everything seem scarier,”
Nilly said.
“I know, isn’t it wonderful?” Endoh said as she spun around.
“Wow you’re sure lively tonight,” Said Nilly slightly surprised.
“What am I supposed to be, dead?”
“Well aren’t you scared that something will happen?”
Asked Kumiko. Kumiko
and Nilly jumped as some leaves rustled
behind them.
“Oh come on guys, there isn’t anything to be afraid of,” Something in Endoh’s
voice wavered, hinting a slight bit of
fear rising inside of her. Endoh could hear the
playful screams of the trick or treaters.
Wow, if we were really in trouble our screams
wouldn’t
be heard-gah stop it! Stop thinking so much, you’re just paranoid. Nothing will
happen
Endoh…
“Endoh…Endoh?”
Endoh snapped out of
thought. “Hmm? What?”
“Are you ok?”
Nilly asked.
“Uhh… yeah,”
Endoh realized she had a blank look on her face; she forced a fake
smile to her lips. “…Yeah, I’m just fine,”
“Are you sure? You looked kind of out of it for a while,” Kumiko said worriedly.
“I was just thinking to myself,” Endoh didn’t want to continue the matter further.
“Anyways we are almost there, only a couple more blocks to go,” Nilly said.
“And the dance has already started!” Said Kumiko as she looked at her glow in
the dark watch on her wrist.
“What? Are you serious?! I thought we left early!” Endoh said in disbelief.
“I tolled you guys we should have left earlier.” Nilly said.
“We had better hurry then!” Kumiko said
“Here I know a short cut to the school, follow me!” Endoh said as she started
running in the opposite direction.
“Where are we going?”
Kumiko asked
“To the school, just follow me,” Endoh turned into an ally way. “Ok guys, do
exactly what I do ok, no matter what.”
“wha- why?” Nilly said in-between breaths.
“just do it! Ok you will have to jump, but you will need a good running start ok?”
“Ok…” Kumiko said cautiously.
“Ok get your running start now!” Endoh ran then leaped across a canal. The canal
was only about two yards across, small
for a usual canal in California,
the moon light
glimmered across the dark waters and Endoh
only cast a small shadow while leaping
across the canal. She landed on the other
side neatly. She heard a thud as Nilly landed
and toppled onto Endoh. “Ahg,”
Endoh scooted out from underneath Nilly
“Sorry, lost my balance,
“Obviously,
There was a thud splash as Kumiko landed then lost her footing and fell into the
dark frigid water in the canal.
“Kumiko!” Endoh yelled. Endoh rushed over to the canal’s edge. She saw Kumiko grabbing on to the
edge of the canal. Endoh reached down “Kumiko grab my hand!” Endoh reached farther towards Kumiko. Kumiko unsteadily
let go with one of her hands and grabbed Endoh’s hand. Endoh tried to get a good grip on her hand but her hand was just
slimily enough to make it difficult to grip. Endoh felt their hands slowly slipping apart. Endoh reached with her other hand
and grabbed Kumiko’s wrist. Endoh could slightly feel herself start to rock back and forth on her toes. “Nilly
help,” Endoh looked at Nilly who was beside her, she looked helpless just sitting there in the moon light.
Nilly’s face changed as soon as Endoh spoke to her, A look of determination flashed before she answered “Ok”
and grabbed Endoh by the shoulders.
As soon as Endoh was sure she wouldn’t fall into the canal herself she pulled Kumiko out of the frigid water
of the canal. The three of them were breathing deeply. Endoh looked at the two of them. Nilly was In her witch costume, her
hat wasn’t on her head anymore, it was lying on the ground about a yard away from her. Then there was Kumiko in her,
now soaked, mummy costume.
“are you alright Kumiko?” Nilly asked.
“Yeah I’m alright,”
Nilly took of her witches’ cape and
gave it to Kumiko for some warmth. “so I guess it’s too late to go to the dance now huh?”
Endoh had to laugh “Yeah it’s too late, and you being drenched as you are wouldn’t be able to go
in anyways,” Endoh starred up at the crescent moon in the sky “The
dance should be ending right about now anyways right?”
Kumiko looked at her watch “Oh darn, my watch is broken. It obviously isn’t all that water proof.”
“Come on guys, we should be getting home, especially now that we don’t know the time.”
